No Borders Iceland

Despite several groups having spoken out against racism in Iceland over the years, there was little criticism directed at the hundreds of deportations of refugees carried out by the Icelandic state. In 2008, however, a shift occurred when a mass movement emerged as the Kenyan Paul Ramses was about to be deported. The movement eventually succeeded in bringing him back to the country after he had been sent to Italy. As a result, public awareness of refugee conditions increased, and refugees themselves began fighting for their rights in cooperation with locals.

The informal cooperation between refugees and Icelandic activists laid the foundation for what later became the Icelandic branch of the No Borders movement.

No human being is illegal.
